Early Years Yoga

Belonging, Being and Becoming

Yoga ticks many boxes in the Early Years Framework. Yoga helps create and maintain body awareness and calms the mind and this contributes to a strong sense of wellbeing. Specialised children’s yoga classes provide access to dynamic, complex and holistic ways of learning. Children learn to use their bodies in new and exciting ways, connecting mind, body and spirit through play and this in turn is engaging and engenders confidence and positive self-concept. Regular yoga classes and 5 minute daily routines contribute to the active learning environment already provided by early years educators. Yoga helps create physical and social learning environments that have a positive impact on children’s learning.

Below is how Kate links yoga sessions to the Early Years Learning Framework

  1. Children have a strong sense of identity: yoga can help children develop a strong sense of self by promoting self-awareness, self-confidence, and positive self-esteem. Through yoga, children can learn to appreciate and respect their bodies, and to identify and celebrate their unique strengths and abilities.

  2. Children are connected with and contribute to their world: yoga can help children develop a connection to the natural world by promoting mindfulness and a sense of interconnectedness with all living beings. Through yoga, children can also develop empathy and compassion for others, and learn about different cultures and traditions.

  3. Children have a strong sense of wellbeing: yoga can help promote physical health and wellbeing by improving flexibility, balance, and coordination, and by supporting the development of healthy habits and lifestyles. Yoga can also be a valuable tool for promoting relaxation and stress reduction, and for supporting emotional regulation and self-care.

  4. Children are confident and involved learners: yoga can help children develop a positive attitude towards learning by promoting curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Through yoga, children can also learn to take risks and make decisions about their own learning, and to develop a growth mindset that supports lifelong learning.

  5. Children are effective communicators: yoga can help children develop effective communication skills by promoting active listening, clear expression, and respectful interaction with others. Through yoga, children can also develop a sense of self-awareness and emotional regulation that supports effective communication and positive relationships with others.

“We have had the pleasure of working with Kate in a preschool setting with 4-5 year old children. Kate has designed a fantastic package that we have easily followed with the children after her sessions. Kate’s yoga sessions have been so much fun and the children have loved it. We have seen the benefits for the children developing core strength and promoting wellbeing and mindfulness. I can highly recommend!”
